Games

I am a big retro gaming fan and in my spare time I like to make games for old consoles. So far there are five for the Nintendo 64 and one for the Game Boy, and you can play all of them in your browser.

N64

Three of them are open worlds, one is a battle royale and one is a beat ’em up. They’re made to look and feel like games from the late 90s, with low-poly worlds, heavy fog and a 320×240 picture.

Miami 64 gameplay: the player walks along a palm-lined Ocean Drive at sunset.

Miami 64

Steal a car, work for Lou Vega and bring down Vince Valentine in an open world that you wouldn’t believe could run on an original N64.

Bristol 64 gameplay: the player stands on a pavement in the Avon Gorge with the Clifton Suspension Bridge ahead.

Bristol 64

Sir Nigel Vance wants the whole Harbourside, and the people standing in his way run a chip shop, a pirate radio station, a boatyard and a milk round.

Frontier 64 gameplay: the player in a black hat stands on a boardwalk in Coyote Springs.

Frontier 64

The railroad reached town last spring and Cornelius Crane wants the town’s spring. You step off the train with a saddle and three dollars.

Battle 64 gameplay: two players in split screen, one driving a jeep through a river and the other chasing in a second jeep.

Battle 64

A battle royale for the Nintendo 64. Drop onto an island, loot the buildings, stay inside the shrinking zone and try to be the last one standing.

Streets of Spark 64 gameplay: the player in blue fights green-clad thugs in a Bristol street.

Streets of Spark 64

A 3D beat ’em up for up to four players. Punch, kick and grab your way through Bristol, one gang at a time.

Made for the browser and the console

The games share a lot of code. The web versions run on three.js and copy the N64’s look with a low-resolution picture, dithering and a shader that imitates its blurry texture filtering. The N64 versions are written in C with libdragon and Tiny3D, and play the same game.

They’re best on a computer with a keyboard or a gamepad, and your progress is saved in your browser.

N64 ROMs on request

These games run on a real Nintendo 64 as well as in the browser, and they need the Expansion Pak. If you’d like the ROMs, just ask me on GitHub or LinkedIn.

Game Boy

Empire Boy

War in your pocket.

A real-time strategy game for the original Game Boy that you can also play in the browser. Build houses, barracks and an economy, advance to the Castle age, and destroy the enemy Town Centre before they destroy yours.

If you’ve got a link cable, you can play against a friend.
